Grades

In modern society, it has been controversial whether students are encouraged to learn by their grades. However, I basically disagree with the position that grades help students to study hard because grades can cause students to be discouraged and prevent them from concentrating on learning.

Most of all, students are likely to have negative attitudes toward learning due to lower marks. As a matter of fact, most students tend to enthusiastically participate in their classes when satisfied with their schoolwork or complimented by their teacher. However, lower grades would make students frustrated and discouraged, which might lead students to lose interests in their academic tasks. Accordingly, students could lose self-esteem as well as self-confidence as disappointed in their grades. For example, when I was a high school student, I was doing very well at school and always was first in class. However, I began to be sick and tired of studying after my school grades were gradually lower. This was because all the school teachers and even my parents blamed me for neglect of my grades. From this, I found that grades could lead students to show negative attitudes toward studying.

In addition, students can hardly focus on their studies due to their grades. Generally, to get higher grades, students should not only do lots of schoolwork but also follow school regulations and teachers’ guidance. Thus, they would pay more attention to miscellaneous tasks influencing grades than classes that they really like to study. Therefore, grades keep students from devoting themselves to the fields they are really interested in.

To sum up, I strongly oppose the perspective that marks are conducive to students’ learning. This is because students could easily be depressed and hardly concentrate on studying because of low grades.
